Walking on water...
Wow summer is here and our blog has come to a screeching halt...I hope to spend more time processing and writing about the hunter/gather process. What has been going on in our world lately..Backpacking,Birthday parties, friends in from out of town and thus having a reason to skip the great workouts...No... but alas it has been a week or so since I have been to Crossfit. I must say that seeing the callouses that I have worked to hard to build are starting to come off. I love that Crossfit has a 6am class and it was great to see Tobias face this morning.
I have been realizing lately the importance of drinking water. It's amazing to me how much my meal size shrinks and my unhealthy snacking stops when I am consuming the amount of water I should be. It make sense that if the body is up to 60% of the human body is water, the brain is composed of 70% water, and the lungs are nearly 90% water. Lean muscle tissue contains about 75% water by weight, as is the brain; body fat contains 10% water and bone has 22% water. About 83% of our blood is water, which helps digest our food, transport waste, and control body temperature. Each day humans must replace 2.4 liters of water, some through drinking and the rest taken by the body from the foods eaten. Why should you drink water? Water is your body's principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues. Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired. I believe that when I was at my highest weight I was in a continuous state of mild dehydration and thought it was hunger pains thus causing me to eat more which food contains water but it would have been way healthier if I would of just had a pint of water instead of food. So now the question bears How much water do I drink or how much should one drink...For me I try to get a least a gallon of water per day. I place the gallon of water on my desk at work to remind me to drink. Now that doesn't mean you should because we are all created differently. I must for warn you that drinking this much does mean that you are in the bathroom like a 5 year old , yet I have now realized one of my keys to being healthy no matter how small it may seem to at the time that drinking water is of most importance!

The Process of Inoculation
inculcate |inˈkəlˌkāt; ˈinkəl- instill (an attitude, idea, or habit) by persistent instruction.
• teach (someone) an attitude, idea, or habit by such instruction : they will try to inculcate you with a respect for culture.
When I was 440lbs there were a ton of ways I was numb to the fact that I was slowly committing suicide with my habits. One of my drugs of choice was technology (TV, intertent, and video games). I always thought I never had enough time for working out, training, and going to the shooting range.
Then I had an Ah Ha moment when I sat down to watch the show Biggest Loser with an entire large pizza all to myself. I realized two things in that moment; 1. that with all the technology - there wasn't enough time for what I truly desired in my heart to do, which is martial arts. 2. was that I was living vicariously though others and I wanted to start doing what I use to love.
This realization has changed my life forever... my down time has been transformed into something amazing. It's actually enjoyable and peaceful since I am not filling that time with video games, TV, and videos. In fact, I am also saving tons of money since we don't have cable and video games to eat away at the budget. Now I am not saying that technology is bad in and of itself but what I am saying is anything moderation is key! but the real challenge is to ask yourself this - Is this benefiting me?
If you too would like to know what technology freedom feels like - check out this challenge on Whole9.com - Kill Your TV. It will challenge you in ways you probably never foresaw.
Here is to the inoculation of deadly habits and the welcoming of life giving changes!

The Great Divide…PRIDE
“Pride makes us artificial and humility makes us real.”
Thomas Mertin
I must say that getting back into Martial Arts/ Functional Fitness is proving to be very humbling. Why you may ask? Well, due to the enormous amounts of inflated perceptions of my ability. Growing up and being the eldest I have always pushed myself to be the best and I excelled when it came to pushing through pain to reach my goals especially when it came to wrestling or physical activity. My high school wrestling coach went to the Olympics while he was coaching us which gave me an Olympic style work ethic.
The gym I use to “roll” at had a quote:
“It’s not how hard you act…it’s how hard you train.”
I am now seeing that my pride in years past because of work as a bouncer and being able to handle myself when it came to fighting, pride has crept in. It has been hard at times to reconcile that I am not the best and I obviously know now I never was, yet I do desire to be one of the top 5% that has put in the time and effort to be the elite.
Where do I go from here? How do I keep myself from repeating my mistakes? There is only one option from this perspective…get back to the basics and train like HELL!
CS LEWIS said, "A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”
If there is one thing I know, pride robs you from learning. Training will make me look at my skill level and give me the ability to look up, furthermore; to see that I am not on top of the mountain, to simply enjoy my own progress, and not worry if I am not the best. Here's to being humble and giving myself time to grow into who I want to become!

Bruised Not Broken
Wow...am I black and blue... I went my first Muay Thai boxing class last night and boy is my ego beat up. I have been involved off and on with martial arts since I was a kid and I like to think that I can handle myself when it is necessary. I have been a bouncer for many years and have been in many hands on confrontations and have never had a problem with keeping myself safe. Yet trying to learn a new martial art when my brain is programed to block, kick, and punch in a different martial art style is proving to be very difficult as you can see. I must say I like the pain cause I know it is teaching me and the bruises are reminding me to stay focused and train harder. I wish I had all the time and money I need to train 24/7 so I could progress a lot faster. Once again martial arts is opening up my eyes to see that I not only need physical work but also need to be humble and patient.
PS doing Crossfit right before probably wasn't a good idea either.
Heres to learning slowly!

Replicated Pioneer Launch
Just last week we embarked on a new facet of our weight loss and health. We needed a change to our current weight gain rut.
We canceled our gym memberships, Beth cancelled weight watchers and we chose to change the game.
We joined Alive MMA which also houses Alive Boxing and CrossFit Woodstock. Since the recommended diet is Paleo we are planning to change everything about the way we eat.
This blog is just that.... Our journey.
Little back history: When Jake and I started dating we loved eachother through food. Everything we did and said was mostly about food. Jake was 440lbs and I was a stocky 286lbs. Once we got married we knew the way we lived needed to change. Jake started low carb and lost 140lbs the first year. I didn't quite get on the weight loss wagon till later that year but once I started weight watchers I lost 78lbs in 7 months.
It was hit and miss, on and off again, losing and gaining for the last 2+ years. This rut is deep and wide but we are putting on our cleats and starting this treck as if it were day one.
Jake @ 325lbs on 5/10/11
Beth @ 250lbs on 5/10/11
We attended 3 crossfit classes last week, backpacking over the weekend and this week plan to hit at least 5 crossfit classes.
Welcome to our journey. Lets do this together. Join us. Laugh with us (or at us). Read all about us as we push through our strongest addition.
Pictures to come!
